Le groupe s'est formé en 2000 à London, Ontario, sous le nom Imagica. L'original line-up du groupe était : Chibi (chant), Rainbow (guitare et programmation), Michael Falcore (guitare), et J. Aslan (basse).
Dank jouait au clavier et O.E. à la batterie pendant les lives. Une demo de 7 titres est sortie en édition limitée.
En 2001, Dank quitte le groupe, et les autres déménage de London pour Toronto, Ontario, pour commencer à enregistrer. Là-bas, ils enregistrent une autre demo en édition limitée, cette fois de 5 titres.
Peu de temps après, le groupe adopte le nom The Birthday Massacre. En juillet 2002, The Birthday Massacre enregistre indépendamment un CD en édition limitée, "Nothing and Nowhere". En 2003, Adm rejoint le groupe pour le clavier en live et Rhim à la batterie. Le 20 juillet 2004, TBM sortent un EP de 9 titres, "Violet", et à la fin de l'année, ils ressortent "Nothing and Nowhere", mais avec une nouvelle pochette. Adm quitte peu de temps après le groupe pour poursuivre ses propres projets. En automne 2004, le groupe signe avec Repo Record en Allemagne, et ressorte un version remasterisée de "Violet", agrémentée d'autres chansons, pour l'Europe.
En 2005, le groupe signe avec Metropolis Records et sortent "Violet" aux USA, Canada, Grande Bretagne et en Amérique du sud.
Owen rejoins TBM au clavier pour les lives, et en aout, le groupe commence une tournée internationale qui les conduisent en Suisse, Allemangne, les Pays-Bas, Hongrie, la République Tchèque, et la Belgique. Aussi en aout, ils sortent un dvd du clip pour le titre "Blue", avec inclus un "Behind-The-Scene", ces interviews, une performance studio de "Nevermind", et des preformances live de "Violet" et "Video Kid".
Début 2006, TBM font une tournée en Amérique du nord, au Canada, et Mexique pour leur "Broken Minds" tour. Ils joue aussi en Europe pendant l'été 2006.
En juin 2007, on annonce que le groupe travaille sur un nouveau cd avec le producteur canadien Dave "Rave" Ogilvie et le bassiste Aslan quitte le groupe pour son propre projet. Il est remplacé à la basse par l'ancien batteur O.E. La version démo de leur premier single, "Kill The Lights", est en boucle sur Vampirefreaks et MySpace, en streaming le 1er janvier 2007.
Le 10 septembre 2007, le groupe a sorti "Walking Wwith Strangers" en Amérique du Nord, et le 21 septembre en Europe.

Nevermind
Five glasses changed my mind.
Seems like the ticking hands are taking their time.
I guess I've been at home for longer than it takes to unwind,
So slap me if I step out of line.
Now in smaller spaces, careless lust intoxicated.
Away from prying eyes and rabid smiles and everythings shattering.
My invitation was involuntary dilation and now I cant recall your name.
I think we've met before
It was last christmas on our parent's accord
You where the young man in the costume that was hard to ignore
And I was feeling hopelessly bored...
Now you're conversations scholarships and occupations.
You look so different than before when... Never mind... Anyway...
This reckless violation, tarnishing my reputation
